Focus Area M – Materials and Additive Technologies
In Focus Area M, the MEP investigates so‑called 4D materials, that is, materials whose properties change over time and can be controlled by internal or external stimuli. Our research covers solid functional and shape‑changing materials as well as fluid particulate multiphase and phase‑transforming systems. We use digital multiscale simulation models for knowledge‑based material development and design. This allows us to understand materials not only as substances but as functional systems that can actively respond and adapt to changing requirements.
A central priority is the development and optimization of these materials in combination with additive technologies. To achieve this, we integrate process‑driven property transformations with AI‑supported modelling and high‑precision numerical simulation. In addition, we use high‑performance computing infrastructures within the joint SciCoHub ecosystem to enable continuous analysis and optimization of material and process design.
