Open Day and Mouse Day on October 3, 2026: The MEP warmly invites you to explore, discover and participate
On Saturday, October 3, 2026, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) will open its doors across the entire Garching Research Campus for its annual Open Day. The Munich Institute of Integrated Materials, Energy and Process Engineering (MEP) will be part of the campus-wide event with a diverse program showcasing cutting-edge research in energy, materials, and biotechnology.
What can you expect at the MEP?
Visitors will have the opportunity to gain exclusive insights into ongoing research through a series of laboratory tours. Explore how the Combined Smart Energy Systems (CoSES) Lab simulates the energy supply of an entire city, discover how batteries are tested under realistic operating conditions, and visit a modern cell culture laboratory used for advanced biomanufacturing research.
In addition, themed exhibition spaces and children's lectures will highlight future-oriented topics such as deep geothermal energy, sustainable energy systems, and flow simulations. Interactive hands-on activities will invite visitors of all ages to become researchers themselves, from exploring photovoltaic modules and geological processes to experimenting with fascinating biochemical phenomena.
The program will also feature the special exhibition “10 Years of the Bavarian Geothermal Alliance”, presenting the most important milestones from a decade of collaborative research on deep geothermal energy in Bavaria.
At the same time, the MEP will participate in Germany’s nationwide “Doors Open with the Mouse” Day (“Türen auf mit der Maus”), organized by the popular WDR children’s program The Show with the Mouse (“Die Sendung mit der Maus”). Held annually on October 3, the initiative enables children and families to explore places that are usually inaccessible to the public and to experience science, technology, and innovation firsthand.
With its laboratory tours, interactive stations, and dedicated activities for children, the MEP contributes to this initiative by making current research tangible and accessible for young audiences. Children are encouraged to ask questions, conduct experiments, and discover the exciting worlds of energy, materials science, and biotechnology through hands-on experiences.
Do I need to register?
No registration is required. All visitors are welcome to join.
Is childcare available?
Rather than offering separate childcare, the MEP encourages parents and guardians to explore the institute together with their children. Numerous experiments, interactive exhibits, and opportunities to engage directly with researchers make the event an exciting experience for all generations.
