New publication from the Chair of Technical Electrochemistry: Intercalated protons destabilize nickel rich NCM cathodes and shorten cycle life
TUM.Battery News, Batterieforschung Publikationen |
In EES Batteries, researchers at TUM show that moderate proton intercalation in nickel rich NCM cathodes reduces rate capability and, during operation, promotes the formation of an oxygen depleted, highly resistive surface phase and accelerates the decomposition of the conducting salt LiPF₆. The finding explains the shortened lifetime of affected cells and underscores the importance of proper storage and processing conditions for NCM materials.
