TUM.Hydrogen & PtX Network strengthens international collaboration: Research trip to Australia

As part of the TUM–Australia Renewable Energy Initiative, funded by the Bayerische Forschungsallianz, Sebastian F., Lukas Anthofer, and Theresa Hauth (supported by the Joachim Herz Stiftung) spent two weeks across Australia engaging with leading research and industry partners in the field of sustainable energy systems.
The journey began in Brisbane with a visit to the H2Xport pilot plant at the Queensland University of Technology, providing insights into the experimental validation of decentralized hydrogen systems. At the University of Queensland – a key partner of TUM – discussions focused on current research activities and initial ideas for joint projects, including innovative membrane reactors for methanol synthesis.
Further stops included the Queensland Centre for Advanced Technologies of CSIRO, where cutting-edge carbon conversion technologies were presented, as well as industry partners such as Wildfire Energy and Endua, showcasing practical solutions for hydrogen production and utilization.
After crossing to the west coast, the delegation visited the CSIRO Syncat Facility in Perth, featuring highly automated platforms for catalyst and reactor testing, as well as the University of Western Australia and Curtin University. These visits revealed strong synergies in research areas such as pyrolysis, gasification, solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC), and methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) synthesis.
A key takeaway from the trip: international collaboration is a critical accelerator for experimental research in sustainable energy systems. The TUM.Hydrogen & PtX Network looks forward to deepening these partnerships, advancing joint proposals, and welcoming Australian collaborators to Munich in the near future.
