Green ammonia synthesis is widely considered a promising Power-to-X technology. Through part-load-oriented design, we achieve a reduction in the minimum load of an ammonia reactor from 22 to 10%.

Ammonia is an important base chemical and is considered a promising carbon-free energy carrier. Conventional process design aims to optimize a process with respect to its nominal operating point. To meet the requirements of a renewable energy system, we simultaneously consider two process models representing the same process at full and part load. This simultaneous consideration of full and part load enables a bi-objective optimization of load flexibility and investment costs. Through the part-load-oriented design, we achieve a reduction of the minimum load from 22 to 10% with only 3 – 7% additional reactor costs.
