We are pleased to announce a seminar series by Pedro de Souza, who will be visiting the Munich Institute of Integrated Materials, Energy and Process Engineering (MEP) scheduled January 19-30, 2026.
During his stay, Pedro de Souza will offer a short workshop on adsorption and interfacial phenomena in bioseparation processes. The workshop introduces the physical mechanisms of adsorption phenomena in bioseparation and purification processes. Through examples from ion-exchange chromatography, membrane transport, and interfacial thermodynamics, participants will explore how molecular interactions govern selective adsorption and material performance.
The session bridges theory and experiment, combining surface science concepts with process modeling tools. Designed for graduate students and researchers, the short course fosters understanding of interfacial mechanisms and equips participants to connect molecular insight with scalable process design.
About Pedro de Souza:
Pedro de Souza is an incoming assistant professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at UCLA starting in March 2026. His research focuses on how electrochemical interactions organize materials across scales to understand soft and living systems and design separation platforms.
Pedro completed his BS in chemical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his PhD in chemical engineering at MIT under the supervision of Prof. Martin Bazant, where he developed mathematical models of the structure and transport of electrolytes near interfaces.
As an ODBI2 Bioengineering postdoctoral fellow at Princeton University, Pedro worked with Prof. Howard Stone and Prof. Sabine Petry using theory and experiments to investigate biomolecular phase separation processes related to cell division.
Participation:
The sessions will take place on January 20, 21, and 23, each from 09:00 to 11:30. The seminar is open to all interested researchers, Ph.D. candidates, and students of TUM. The number of participants is limited to 25, and registration is required by email to registration(at)mep.tum.de. When registering, please include the subject line: “Workshop with Pedro de Souza”. This will help us process your registration efficiently.
A certificate of participation can be provided upon request.
