New publication on the use of oxygenate-containing fuel blends in aircraft engines

In a test campaign at the LTF, ethanol and OME3-5 were mixed in small quantities with regular Jet A-1. The fuel blend was burned in a helicopter engine to investigate the impact on the resulting soot emissions.

The article investigates the impact of blending small amounts of oxygenated fuels with regular Jet A-1 on the particle concentration in the exhaust gases of a helicopter engine (Allison 250-C20B). The tested oxygenated fuels included an OME3-5 mix and ethanol. OME was added at 5 vol%, and ethanol at 5 and 20 vol%. A Condensation Particle Counter (CPC) was used to measure the soot particles. The results show a tendency toward a reduction in the number of soot particles when oxygenates are blended with Jet A-1.
