On April 4, 2025, the first on-site meeting of the TUM Hydrogen and PtX Network in 2025 took place at the Chair of Urban Water Systems Engineering. After a short introduction to the diverse research activities of the chair along the water cycle, the newly converted methanation plant with integrated electrolyzer on the site of the neighboring Garching wastewater treatment plant was visited in bright spring weather.
As part of the KomMeth project, the microbiological methanation of hydrogen and carbon dioxide in trickle bed reactors under thermophilic conditions is being researched. The purpose is to demonstrate the functionality of the entire process in a practical way by coupling electrolysis and methanation.
The successful conclusion of the meeting was a convivial get-together with meatloaf and the chair's own Reuse Brew, a home-brewed beer made from treated wastewater.
This network meeting also marked the farewell to Marcel, who has contributed significantly to the establishment and development of the network over the past few years with a great deal of time, passion and commitment. The entire TUM.Hydrogen & PtX network would like to thank you for your commitment and the great organization of the last years.
The material focus in MEP drives research towards a new frontier of material science in 4D Materials. The unique aspect is that 4D Materials, i.e. materials with temporal property varia-tion, driven by external or internal stimuli, encompass not only smart/functional/shape-morphing solid materials but... Carbon-neutral energy systems require a new comprehensive design strategy. Material pro-duction and component manufacturing enter the system analysis, as does the interaction of the system with the natural environment during its operation. New energy carriers gain im-portance with an expected dominance of electricity... Learn more
MEP integrates process engineering with life and medical sciences through a material-cen-tered approach. System modeling and prediction help to understand (bio-)chemical material conversion and to tailor product properties with target applications in pharmaceutical and industrial biotechnology, medicine...
