With climate change becoming an increasing problem, approaches for alternative sources of energy have become necessary. As such, ways to limit and reduce CO2 emissions have shifted into focus. However, the energy sector still calls for innovative approaches in areas such as large-scale production of sustainable environment-friendly energy as well as its efficient distribution. Procedures are devised to replace fossil fuel as our main source of energy, for instance by replacing it with green hydrogen. Carbon capture processes are developed to decrease CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere and environmentally friendly energy sources such as natural gas are being used. But alternative production of energy also calls for innovative design of industrial plants, processing procedures and distribution. In the upcoming winter school 2021 methods are addressed on how to convert sustainability into reality.

Energy and Food  

  • February 16 - 20, 2020

  • Costs: 500 € p.p. (including excursion, board and lodging)

  • Who: up to 30 participants (Ph.D. candidates; post graduates)

  • Requirements: Interest in sustainable development and energy questions, agriculture, food processing or distribution, interested in energy accounting methods of complex processes

Is vertical farming in fact a sustainable way for food production in big cities and dense agglomerations? Proponents highlight the large-scale food production in high-rises throughout the year, using less resources due to direct sales, the multiplication use of square meter and the minimization of water requirements. Opponents argue that the energy use and costs for lighting, heating and cooling as well as power and watering go beyond the numbers compared to traditional farms. Furthermore, meeting the energy demand with renewable energy would mean a huge area for e.g. photovoltaics or wind. To get a reliable basis for an evaluation of this farming technique, we will take into account energy and water consumption and the CO2 emissions for the whole process chain regarding plant types and cultivation systems, dependent upon cultural and consumption habits.

Food and Energy

  • Requirements: Interest in sustainable development and energy questions, agriculture, food processing or distribution, interested in energy accounting methods of complex processes

The food industry is facing emerging challenges: Food production accounts for 30% of global final energy consumption; processing and distribution as well as retail and preparation are the main factors for a highly inefficient industry. This problem will get worse with 80% of the 10 billions people living in cites in 2050. With the transformation to renewable energy the production of fertilizers is facing a big change. Food scandals upset consumers and make the call for regional products even louder. Due to climate change and droughts crop failures are predicted to occur more often. During the Winter School 2019 „Food and Energy“ we address these challenges and discuss approaches to a sustainable food production and supply chain.
