Powder Bed Fusion of Metals using a Laser Beam (PBF-LB/M) is gaining attraction for fabricating intricate parts across industries. Achieving a reliable manufacturing process is crucial for its future success. Both experiments and simulations are valuable for understanding the complex interactions in PBF-LB/M. While experiments provide the closest representation of real-world processes, they have limitations in measuring dynamic phenomena like transient temperature profiles. Simulations, on the other hand, offer non-invasive monitoring of various parameters with high resolution, although ensuring equivalence with real-world effects remains a challenge. Our SPH-based simulation framework LAMAS focuses on fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, predicting phenomena like the transition from conduction-mode to keyhole-mode. We aim to couple melt pool dynamics with solidification processes to characterize resulting material properties, addressing challenges in scale separation between micro-scale solidification and meso-scale melt pool dynamics.
